Born to break records, hearts, and bank accounts, the 2026 McLaren W1 hypercar is the long-awaited successor to the venerated, 903-hp P1 hybrid supercar of a decade ago. Lovingly crafted from carbon fiber and packing a 1258 horsepower hybrid powertrain, the W1 topples all of the brand's previous benchmarks: the twin-turbo V-8 and radial flux electric motor hybrid powertrain is claimed to be the most powerful in any McLaren yet; its 3084-pound dry weight calculates to a claimed power-to-weight ratio of just 2.45 pounds per horsepower. (The very, very rapid Ferrari 296 GTB hybrid, for comparison, lugs 4.3 pounds per horsepower).

Aerodynamics play their part in the W1 performance equation, of course: active aero bits including the Long Tail Rear Wing that extends rearward up to 11.8 inches combine to produce a maximum of 2205 pounds of downforce. So effective are the W1's powertrain and aero package that McLaren claims it's three seconds quicker around the company’s Nardo reference circuit than the track-focused McLaren Senna, and the W1’s 12.7-second time to 186 mph is quicker than that of the vaunted Speedtail. Remarkably and refreshingly, the W1 is a rear-wheel drive-only proposition. Record-smashing metrics aside, the new W1 is a gorgeous and exclusive work of kinetic art, the latest in a long line of road-going McLarens imbued with extraordinary levels of useable performance. If you have the means, it has the beans—to thrill beyond comprehension, that is.

Everything! From the cutting-edge V-8-and-radial flux electric motor hybrid powertrain to the F1-derived active aerodynamics, the W1 is the latest incarnation of McLaren's assault on street-going performance—but we’re sure it’ll be a hoot on the track too.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance: The short story is that the W1 uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain comprised of McLaren's new MHP-8 turbocharged V-8 engine working in unison with a new radial-flux electric motor and the attendant motor control unit, paired with an 8-speed transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. The traditional V-8 is good for 916 horsepower and the electric motor 342 horsepower. Combined, that's 1258 ponies, the highest output of any McLaren; did we mention the 988 pound-feet of torque?

Digging deeper reveals that the 4.0-liter V-8 is a twin-turbocharged flat-plane-crank design that can rev to 9200 rpm and produces a specific output 230 hp-per-liter— the highest ever in a McLaren, according to the manufacturer. The electric element includes a motorsport-derived E-module (a radial flux motor and integrated Motor Control Unit weighing just 44 pounds and similar to the type used in IndyCar racing).

The electric motor is mounted to the transmission and can spin up to 24,000 rpm. The E-module is powered by a battery of about 1.4 kWh, which is enclosed in a structural carbon-fiber box and located low in the chassis to benefit the center of gravity. The battery maintains a minimum level of charge to crank the engine on vehicle start-up and to power the fully electric reversing function. McLaren quotes an electric-only driving range of about two miles and a charging time of 22 minutes to bring the battery to 80 percent.

0–60-MPH Times: According to McLaren, the W1 can hit 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds. More remarkable, accelerating from 0-124 mph requires just 5.8 seconds. Drivers with the will to stay in the throttle will find 186 mph comes up in a hair under 12.7 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 217 mph.

Acceleration : 0-60mph 2,7 secs | 0-124mph 5,8 secs
Dry Weight : 3084.26 lbs
Top Speed : 217mph
Power-to-Weight Ratio : 911 PS/tonne
Electric-Only Range : Approx. 1.25 miles
Battery Capacity : 1.4 kWh
Platform : McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA)
Suspension : McLaren Race Active Chassis Control III with active inboard suspension
Active Aerodynamic System : “Active Long Tail” rear wing that can extend up to 300mm
Brakes : McLaren Carbon Ceramic Racing+ (MCCR+) with monoblock forged caliper

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG: McLaren says fuel economy is TBD. We’ll update this story when those figures come in.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo: Supercar interiors have never been paragons of spaciousness, but McLaren insists the W1's driver-focused cockpit "provides the most intelligent use of space of any McLaren yet." That's quite a claim, particularly considering the design uses fixed seats, as their design contributes to the structural rigidity of the carbon fiber monocoque. The pedals, steering wheel, instrument binnacle, and attendant controls move to help the driver find a comfortable position.

Interior space is enhanced by concave sections on the inside door panels and a cantilevered door fin blade that appears to float away from the occupants. Minimal storage is provided by a sliding cupholder, with a second area for small items behind the armrest. There's four cubic feet of space behind the seat too, accessed by folding the headrests forward.

Options abound for cabin customization, including a choice of leather, faux leather, and the first appearance of McLaren InnoKnit, a new flexible and lightweight material suitable for covering a variety of surfaces. Available in multiple textures, shapes, patterns, and colors, it can be integrated into audio and visual elements including the speaker grilles of the W1’s Bowers & Wilkins audio system. Finally, buyers can accentuate the interior with carbon fiber trim bits.

The McLaren W1 includes a comprehensive warranty and maintenance schedule designed for cars with track duty on their resume. Similar to McLaren's equipped with the V-6 hybrid, the V-8 hybrid equipped W1 follows a 12-month service interval schedule that reflects McLaren series production supercars rather than schedules of its track-focused cars.

    (1) Unlimited vehicle warranty covers four years with unlimited mileage.
    (2) The battery is warranted for six years or 45,000 miles.
    (3) Complimentary scheduled maintenance for four years
