The CLA45 brings its power to the road expertly. Even though the CLA is based on a front-wheel-drive platform, the tail rotates quickly exiting corners and the car points easily for the explosion of acceleration that follows.
Powerslides come easily, too. Mercedes's Drift mode routes more torque to the limited-slip rear differential, unlocking the possibility of an untold number of YouTube-worthy moments. Adaptive dampers are optional and have three settings (Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus), and the AMG Dynamics system offers further authority over the all-wheel-drive system, steering effort, and stability control. Fortunately, the brakes—iron rotors at both axles—are always up to the task..
At high speeds, the AMG's stability is exemplary, and the aerodynamics are outstanding: With the optional AMG Aerodynamics package, there is positive downforce. Yet, the CLA45 S is ultraslippery, with a drag coefficient of a mere 0.31.
There is no shortage of visual cues hinting at the CLA45's performance pedigree: The fat, grippy, and oversized steering wheel is bursting with buttons and switches, and the instrumentation features an AMG-specific design. Outside, this fastest CLA is accentuated with spoilers and aprons, huge air intakes, and a quad-outlet exhaust system. Its closest competitor, the Audi RS3, is a far subtler car. But subtlety is something no one should ever expect from Affalterbach.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG: Ferari says fuel economy is TBD. We’ll update this story when those figures come in.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo: While there are two seats inside the F80's cabin, the best seat in the house is obviously reserved for the driver. From the small, flat-sided steering wheel to the relative lack of digital display screens, the F80 is set up to be a driver's car first and all else second. In fact, rather than calling the F80 a two-seater, Ferrari refers to it as a 1+ in its press materials. Underscoring the driver-centric design, the F80 features a bright red driver's seat, while the passenger's seat—which is not adjustable and is little more than padding affixed to the car's carbon-fiber tub—is covered in black upholstery, receding to the background in photos.

Infotainment and Connectivity: There's no infotainment display inside the F80's cabin, at least not in the traditional sense. A digital gauge cluster is the primary display for most everything inside the car and it's operated via steering wheel buttons. A secondary, smaller display on the center console exists merely for climate controls. We don't have all the details on the F80's connectivity features, but don't expect Wi-Fi, a voice assistant, or in-dash gaming features.

Tobias Moers, Mercedes-AMG's chairman, says that the company's all-new 416-hp 2020 CLA45 S, the world's most powerful production compact car, has one goal, and that's "to raise vehicle dynamics and the sporty driving experience to a level previously unimaginable in the compact class." But we're pretty sure that Moers, were he to unbutton his collar, would say something like this: "We took a perfectly reasonable sedan and made it stupid fast, stupid loud, and able to do huge smoky powerslides. You're gonna love it." And we'll probably like the 382-hp CLA45, the only model currently confirmed for the United States. We drove the more powerful variation at the car's international press launch in Madrid, Spain.
